Freeway Emporium - Searcy, Arkansas

One of my favorite flea markets is the Freeway Emporium in Searcy, Arkansas. When traveling to Little Rock, and time allows, I stop in to see what is new.

The building is clean, comfortable and the booths are neat and well organized.

 

Visiting flea markets is like stepping back in time.

Just imagine the wonderful meals that were created using these utensils.

 

 

                                I can smell the chicken frying and the corn bread baking!
                           This booth has the largest collection of cast iron I've ever seen.

 

The milk paint/chalk paint fad dominated several of the booths.

I like to find old pieces and paint them myself with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.

 

 

I have been collecting Early American Prescut by Anchor Hocking for years.

The green color is not as common as the clear.

I've run out of storage space so unless the piece is rare and priced to move I have to pass.

I found a Hull pot for $3.50 and a botanical print in a cute frame for $5.00.

I'm always happy to find a piece of  McCoy or Hull pottery for a reasonable price.

Makeovers with Duck Egg

I found this old birdhouse in the garage and decided to give it a makeover. It was made by a family member years ago. I believe the original color was green. At some point I painted it red.

 

If I were a bird I wouldn't want to live here.

 

Time for some serious curb appeal.

 

I love these little sample containers of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.

For this project I chose Duck Egg.

 

 

I really like the rough condition of the wood.

The birdhouse is made of scrap lumber.

For now the birdhouse is adding a little color to my (ugly) fence.

I bought this frame for less than $4 from a clearance end cap at Target.

 



While working on my birdhouse project I decided to use the Duck Egg on my "bargain" frame.

 

 



 

I printed and popped a recent daffodil photograph into the frame. Here it is with the tool boxes I painted for a previous blog post.

Blue Plate Special - Old-Fashioned Meat Loaf

Here is Saturday's version of "the blue plate special" at my house.
Meat loaf, mustard greens, tomatoes, boiled red potatoes and crescent rolls.

I usually to listen to music while I cook.
Love the guitar run on "Everybody Loves You".

According to Wikipedia, "blue plate special" began as a low priced meal in diners and cafes and consisted of meat and three vegetables.

Ingredients ready to mix.
This is another recipe I pinned on Pinterest.
Some of the recipes are keepers and others are quickly deleted never to be consumed again.
 

All ingredients in the mixing bowl getting happy.
I had never seen a meat loaf recipe with canned tomatoes.
 

I had a little extra ground beef so I decided to make a couple of small loaves with my mixture.
I'll share one with my mother and keep one for left overs later in the week.
 

A quick side dish, "Potatoes in the Jacket" more commonly known as boiled red potatoes.
Just scrub the potatoes and boil until tender.
Add a little butter and salt and pepper.
 

Mom's plate is ready.
Pass the butter and tomatoes.
The dinner plates are Spode from The Blue Room Collection.
 

The tomatoes and rolls are served on Royal Stafford plates from TJ Maxx.
I have lots of blue and white and like to mix the patterns.
The green stemware is also from TJ Maxx.

We enjoyed the recipe. I will definitely make it again.

Spring Thrifting

Recently I spent the day shopping my favorite discount stores.

Paula Deen cereal bowls, salad plates and mugs from Tuesday Morning.  They will probably be used for soup and sandwiches.
The white rabbit is from Tuesday Morning.
 

Place mats - TJ Maxx.
The grasshopper napkin rings were a gift from my sister-in-law.
 

The Waverly bedspread I found at Tuesday Morning.
It was already marked down for clearance and then had an extra 30% off tag!
Into the shopping cart.
 

I added the white lampshade from TJ Maxx.
I think white adds a nice fresh look for spring.
 

I always make a stop at Pottery Barn.
The displays are inspiring and sometimes bargains can be found.
I left with lots of decorating ideas and the Tuscan urn and cachepot.
They were not bargains but I had to have them.
I am considering going back for the large urn!
Wouldn't it be wonderful with huge sunflowers for summer?

The greenery came from Tuesday Morning.
It was similar to the  green "balls" at Pottery Barn but much cheaper. I have had this little bunny for years. I gave him a spray of gold paint followed by the crackle white finish years ago.
